El culto comenzaba en Lodi, New Jersey, su nombre: The Misfits. El seudónimo era tomado de la última película concluida de Marilyn Monroe, la banda era liderada en las vocales por el mítico Glenn Danzig, en el bajo Jerry Only y en la batería Manny Martínez. Desde sus comienzos Misfits dejo ver, que era más que una banda común y corriente de punk-hardcore de la época. Su actitud era más oscura y siniestra, sin duda debido a sus letras, disfraces y parafernalia que utilizaban siempre en sus presentaciones, se incluía la ahora tradicional cara pintada como calavera y el pelo a la devil lock, (que era una especie de copete en pico que llegaba hasta la barbilla, aun utilizado por el bajista Jerry Only). Sus letras hablaban de seres de ultratumba y de películas de ciencia ficción de bajo presupuesto (B movies) y eran vocalizadas por el tono de voz barítono de Danzig. En 1977 Misfits despertaba de su tumba.

Gracias a su carisma, música y letras, rápidamente se ganaron una reputación en el reciente famoso ámbito punk de la época, después de sacar varios sencillos de los cuales se encuentran canciones legendarias como: “Teenagers From Mars“, “Who Killed Marilyn?” y “Halloween”. En 1982 sacan su primer LP llamado “Walk Among Us”, en los que se desprenden clásicos como: "I Turned into a Martian" (covereada por el grupo Mexicano Molotov), "Vampira", "Devil's Whorehouse"(una de mis favoritas) y la controversial, "Mommy, Can I Go out and Kill Tonight?". En la portada del disco aparecen los integrantes junto a un platillo volador y un murciélago, salido de una película de ciencia ficción.

Después de varios albums las rencillas entre Glenn Danzig y los demás miembros originales de la banda se hicieron más evidentes, por lo que Misfits se separa en 1983. Siendo el álbum “Die, Die My Darling”, el último disco con Danzig en las vocales; después de la separación siguieron sacando sencillos y discos recopilatorios, convirtiendo a la banda en una leyenda del género.

Por su parte Glenn Danzig forma diversas bandas, como Samhain y más tarde la banda de metal llamada Danzig, en donde lleva más allá el oscurantismo y la fascinación por el terror visto en Misfits. En 1995 Misfits despertaba nuevamente de su tumba, Jerry Only recluta nuevos integrantes en los que se encuentra un joven llamado: Michael Graves, siendo este el nuevo vocalista del conjunto. El grupo se vuelve a rearmar, este periodo se conoce como la “resurrección” de Misfits. Surgen varios discos en los que se encuentran: “American Psycho”, “Famous Monsters”, “Cuts From The Crypt” y un álbum en vivo llamado “Evillive II”. Aunque el hueco que dejó Glenn Danzig era bastante difícil de llenar, el nuevo Misfits con Graves en la voz, recibió buena acogida por parte de los fans y aunque la música, tenía más tintes metaleros, la esencia punk-hardcore que caracterizaba a la banda, aun estaba presente. Graves tenía buena voz y también tenía ciertos dotes melodramáticos, por lo que los fans antiguos regresaron, esto aunado a la explosión del punk a mediados de los 90’s, dio a conocer la agrupación, a las nuevas generaciones de jóvenes punkeros, que prácticamente desconocían a la banda, ganando más fanáticos de los que contaban en 1983.

Después de los albums mencionados, Michael Graves y Dr. Chud (batería), se separan del grupo, dejando un hueco de nuevo en la banda, siendo reemplazado en la voz por Mike Hideous y el veterano ex–Misfits: Robo en la batería. A pesar de sus múltiples alineaciones e integrantes, Misfits conserva su esencia gracias al bajista Jerry Only, que ha sabido mantener viva a la agrupación. La discografía de Misfits ha variado bastante a lo largo de los años, pasando de albums buenos a mediocres, atravesando por varias recopilaciones, entre ellas se encuentra mi álbum favorito de la agrupación: “Static Age”, que es un disco armado con diversos sencillos de la época de Glenn Danzig, que salieron a la luz hasta 1995.

Entre las curiosidades discográficas, se encuentra un disco de covers con Only en las vocales, llamado “Proyect 1950”, donde aparecen canciones de los años 50’s y 60’s, en el que se incluyen clásicos como: "Donna" de Ritchie Valens, "Great Balls of Fire" de Jerry Lee Lewis, o "Runaway" de Del Shannon. El último disco de la banda salió en el 2007 y se llamó “Crimson Ghost”, aún no hay fecha para el lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum.

Entre las múltiples alineaciones que ha tenido la banda, han pasado otras leyendas del género punk, como Dez Cadena de Black Flag y hasta el famoso baterista de los Ramones: Marky Ramone. Como dato curioso menciono que su famoso logo de una calavera, apareció por primera vez en un poster que anunciaba una presentación del conjunto y es tomado de una película de suspenso llamada “The Crimson Ghost”. A la creación de Misfits nació el Misfits Fiend Club, que es básicamente su club de fans, si la banda Kiss tiene al Kiss Army, ¿porque Misfits no puede tener el suyo?.

La realidad es que Misfits es más que una playera usada por adolescentes afuera de un Hot Topic, Misfits, es una leyenda viviente de la música punk-hardcore. He sido fan de la banda por mucho tiempo, sé que me gustaría ver a Danzig en las vocales de nuevo, pero los planes de una reunión con los miembros originales de la banda parecen distantes, por lo que sólo quedaré esperar a que estén viejos y se reúnan únicamente por dinero.

Hace relativamente poco, conocí por la revista FUSION, a un músico/amigo colaborador de esta misma, llamado Daniel Salas, sus artículos son de mis favoritos en la revista, porque escribe sobre temas no comunes, del mundo de la música, dos de mis artículos favoritos, (pueden leerlos en antiguas ediciones de la revista, aquí), fueron el de Morrissey en las calles de ELP, y el de la escena punk de los noventas, en esta misma ciudad, su estilo es agradable y lleno de buenas anécdotas, este articulo, me llamo la atención bastante, por lo que me tome la libertad de pedirlo, para que los fanáticos de los vinyles de Soulfood Taqueria, sepan donde conseguirlos en esta ciudad.

An El Paso Guide to finding used records.

If you are getting sick of the limited options of music available for your ipod don’t forget that vinyl records have not gone extinct. They are alive and kicking and keep resurrecting in the form of a pleasurable listening experience. Records are the medium for which the music enthusiast first began their love affair and obsession with sound and music.

Something not too well known is the fact that a lot of music from the past that was made only on vinyl before there were CDs or digital downloads never made the conversion over. Tons of music exist only in the vinyl form, so that means you cant download it or even get it on CD. We might not have an Amoeba record store like in Hollywood where Paul McCartney will randomly show up and play an impromptu show, but if you dig a little you can sometimes find gold. Here is a quick El Paso guide to beefing up or starting up your record collection.

All that Music is a cd/dvd new and used store on the East side of El Paso has a section in the back of the store where you can sometimes get a decent find in the less than mint section, and if you got the extra cash they have a computer with a list of records that are more rare and in better condition. Good finds from the cheaper records ($2.50 each or 5 for $10) have been Neil Young’s On The Beach, soul records from The Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas, blues masters Elmore James and BB King. There is also a section for club DJs and electronic records as well as sleeves for LPs (long play) and 45s (7 inch records).

The next stop is the Wax Museum located in Central El Paso on Montana but is soon to be moving. Here you will find art supplies and magazines as well as nothing but a good selection of records from jazz to rock at a fair price. Owner Zeke Peña has a good ear for music and has selected records out, not just a random pile of Christmas and Nat King Cole records. Here I scored a promo copy (the promotional copy, not the one sold in stores…more rare!) powerpop self titled classic from 20/20 for $6 and punk and roll heroes The Dictators album Bloodbrothers for the same price. The records range from all decades.

If you are in the Northeast side of El Paso you can visit The Headstand. This primarily is a smoke shop and the music sold here mostly Metal, but there are alphabetized used records and boxes of 45s. I found the Velvet Underground’s self titled and a couple of Madchester records (music coming out of Manchester England late 80s early 90s) by the Happy Mondays, A Guy Called Gerald and Northside, all very rare in El Paso to say the least. Although there have been monster finds, over the years of going through these records you stop finding the good stuff and you keep looking through the same records.

Located on Mesa Street on the West side is The Time Capsule that has tons of comics and toys as well as records. Here you get a variety of choices. You can dig through the $1 bins, search through the alphabetically organized more expensive but reasonably priced records, or go all out and spend all your lunch money on a rare expensive record. I was able to find tons of good 60s and 70s Northern soul records for $1 each that have keep the dance floor people moving when I DJ. I like the idea that music captured in something so inexpensive can create excitement and good times.

The last spot is a storage room shopping center type place located on Doniphan called House Mouse records. This is a huge warehouse with records of all sorts scattered all over the place in no particular order or genre but there are small sections of the place that have records grouped and alphabetized such as the impressive Jazz section or the Country records. This is a place where you have to spend a lot of time looking through the massive amount of records to find something good. You have to get through the Christmas and Nat King Cole records here. This place can be hit or miss. You can possibly walk out with Johnny Cash’s original Sun records pressing that are over 50 years old or a red vinyl Kraftwerk record, or walk out dusty with nothing. Go on the weekend.

Across the way in the same shopping center is Rocking T records. This place has very rare records but mostly the good ones are at a hefty price. You can find rare 45s that came out of El Paso such as The Embers on the El Paso label Suemi where the recording studio was just down the street. The last time I went I saw more recent albums by Sparklehorse and Sparta. If you have the bucks, go get them. Other good spots that deserve a mention are all the thrift stores and Goodwill stores all over town, or even the swap meets where I was lucky to find records by the MC5 and James Brown.

Listening to records brings you closer into the recording, putting you in the middle, closer than digital music where there is no space. Vinyl just feels different. It has warmer tones and doesn’t sound so flat. Downloading also seems too easy, like going into a store and buying a precious stone as opposed to searching deep and having the satisfaction of the find itself. Music technology is even reverting itself back to the record form, such as with the Serato DJ equipment that transfers digital music from a computer (usually a laptop) over to a dummy vinyl so you can have the vinyl experience. Don’t despair, vinyl records are immortal. They are the vampires of all the music mediums.

Discos & Stuff

Cuando empecé a escribir esta columna, la idea principal era plasmar una pequeña reseña, sobre los temas que me gustaran y que al mismo tiempo pudiera recomendar. He querido reseñar tantas cosas diferentes, que en realidad no sabía dónde ponerlas todas, por lo que a manera de ejercicio y experimento, Soulfood Taquería, se convierte en columna por una temporada. Estas son las cosas que últimamente, me han llamado la atención, de alguna manera.

1.-Fringe /Serie T.V.- ), Canal 46 de Cablemas.- Ahora pienso que la programación de la mayoría de la T.V. es simple y llanamente basura, existen muchas excepciones y pienso que Fringe es una de ellas, en realidad nunca me consideré fan de la serie de X-Files, pero creo que era bastante buena, aunque un poco lenta para mi gusto. Fringe podría ser un digo sucesor de esta, tiene todo lo necesario para ser una buena serie de culto, efectos paranormales, explosiones, mutaciones, realidades alternas, conspiraciones gubernamentales y un reparto bastante bueno. Se incluyen actores de buena calidad, como la actriz recientemente descubierta, Anna Torv, quién interpreta a la Agente del FBI, Olivia Dunham, entre ellos también están los actores: Joshua Jackson, ex Dawson Creek (si créanlo, actúa bien), y el actor John Noble, quien actuó en el papel de Denethor, el rey sustituto en la película, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, este último se roba todo el protagonismo de la serie, en su papel de científico loco. En el último capítulo de la temporada aparece el actor Leonard Nimoy, más conocido como Spock, de la serie Star Trek, cabe decir que el co-creador de la serie es J.J. Abrams, director del último film de la serie Star Trek, que salió este año a la luz.

2.-Jazz: La Historia (2001), Canal 83 de Cablemas.- A simple vista podría parecer que el canal de la Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM), solo podría ofrecer programación o series, dirigidas a profesores e intelectuales de más de 60 años, pero no podríamos estar más equivocados. Jazz: La Historia, es un documental del cineasta norteamericano Kennneth Burns, mejor conocido como Ken Burns. Consta de doce capítulos de una hora de duración, en la que describe la historia del jazz desde sus comienzos, hasta nuestros tiempos. La serie cuenta con una impecable narración de el actor Keith David, el documental cuenta con fotografías legendarias y entrevistas con grandes jazzistas contemporáneos, como el trompetista Wynton Marsalis, que también fue co-productor de esta serie; la serie cuenta con diversos capítulos, que van desde los inicios del jazz, pasando por sus diferentes épocas, así como sus diversos géneros, tales como el Bebop, el Jazz Fusión y el West Coast Jazz, entre muchos más. En esta serie podemos ver y escuchar excelentes jazzistas que van desde Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis y John Coltrane entre otros.

3.-Nocturna/Guillermo del Toro y Chuck Hogan.- Un avión procedente de Berlín aterriza en Nueva York. Sin embargo, algo no funciona bien desde el momento que toma tierra. Todas las luces del avión están apagadas, nadie responde a las llamadas de la torre de control, nadie contesta a los celulares. Parece como si el avión estuviese muerto…

Lo que al principio se considera un virus muy contagioso pronto se revela como algo aterrador. Los “infectados” tienen mucha sed y solo quieren beber…sangre.

¿Acaso tendría que decir algo más sobre la nueva novela del director mexicano, ahora venido a escritor?, los vampiros están de moda, pero estos no son vampiros pubertos enamorados, son una plaga que se propaga rápido y quieren exterminar a la humanidad. Sangre, putrefacción, peleas, la eterna historia entre el bien y el mal, llevada a las páginas por el estilo peculiar de Guillermo Del Toro, al leer uno asimila de inmediato a los vampiros que son bastante parecidos a los llevados a la pantalla en Blade II, película dirigida por Del Toro en el 2002, el libro es bastante bueno y se puede devorar de inmediato por lo rápido que se tiene que leer.

4.-Farm de Dinosaur Jr.- J Mascis y compañía, regresan este año con Farm, su noveno álbum de estudio, en donde se plasma todas sus distorsiones y sonido característico, que los distinguió en las épocas donde la música “alternativa” gobernaba el mundo, si bien Dinosaur Jr. nunca fue una banda que vendía millones de discos, su sonido diferente de todo lo escuchado, a mediados de los 90’s, le ganó su lugar como una banda de culto, altamente recomendable, si están como nosotros en FUSION, remembrando esa época con nostalgia.

5.-The Dandy Warhols Are Sound /The Dandy Warhols.- Nueva producción de los oriundos de Portland, Oregón, la tecladista Zia McCabe y compañía, regresan con un álbum, lleno de ritmos pegajosos y cadenciosos, rock pop-psicodélico en todo su esplendor, sus armonías son sensuales gracias a el dúo vocal Courtney Taylor-Zia McCabe, disco de rock, sin complicaciones, interesante y sumamente disfrutable.

6.-Radiolarians III/Medeski, Martin & Wood.- Mi grupo favorito de jazz, está de vuelta con el tercer disco de la serie, The Radiolarian Series, que comenzó en septiembre del 2008, con Radiolarians I, siguió con Radiolarians II, lanzado en abril del 2009, y terminó este 4 de agosto con la entrega de este álbum, este disco ofrece experimentación pura, el trió lleva a lugares insospechados con su combo de piano, contrabajo y batería. MM&W, no tienen que demostrar nada a nadie, por lo que se arriesgan a sacar esta serie de discos, sumamente introspectivos y personales, en los que se puede apreciar un gusto musical excepcional y ganas de romper estereotipos, al crear música diferente en el mundo del jazz.

Ray Dub is a local artist dedicated to screen printing and is also a DJ. His music is different than what we may normally hear in the electronic local scene. In modern times, when the majority of the DJ's play electro or house, Ray is going in the opposite direction creating his music the old fashioned way; with vinyls, turntables and rhythmic rare grooves of Soul and R&B. Some may consider him individualistic while others may see him as a lost cause, but words are useless when when his music is heard through the speakers.

Nowadays, as big record labels slowly disappear, the efficient way to distribute music is simple. That is why Ray has collaborated with fellow artist Miguel Ibarra to create Maintain, a company that functions as a recording studio, boutique and graphic design agency. In it are created T-shirts, stickers, pins and mainly, it is used as a spotlight that lets local dj’s share their music. A few days ago I had the chance to talk to Ray about his multi-task "offices", mainly about the music part of it.

This is what he had to say:

FUSION: why do you play House and Downtempo

RAY DUB: well it’s just what I gravitated to. As a kid I was into a lot of hip hop and r&b stuff, whatever was on the radio, and as I got older I started listening to harder electronic sounds, trance, hard house...etc. So I guess it just evolved from there.

F: why don't you play electro, like most of the dj's these days?, lots of dj’s wants to play like Steve Aoki right now.

RD: that’s exactly why; I'm not trying to sound like anyone else. That’s not the crowd i'm trying to connect to. Not everyone goes out to clubs on a Friday night with their sunglasses on.

F: what are your influences?

RD: as far as music influences go, it’s pretty broad. I’m into a lot of different things. Some current favorites I'm into right now…Chris Carrier, Wasted Chicago Youth, Jesse Rose, Brett Johnson…Flying Lotus, Chico Mann, Quantic, Mr. Scruff…on and on. Probably the dj’s that influenced me most in the beginning were Mark Farina and Dj Sneak. When I heard Farina’s San Francisco mix and this obscure live recording of Dj Sneak playing in Toronto with Derrick Carter, i was hooked on that house sound. Something about it.

F: what kind of music is rotating at this time in your iPod or your stereo?

RD: hmm...let’s see...I don’t have an iPod yet and I still play cassettes in my car.

F: cassettes?

RD: jaja, yeah!, most of the cd's i have are dj mixes from friends and other locals from around, live recordings, and stuff like that. Usually just going through tracks, always looking for new music to play.

F: I have heard your mixes, it seems that your music is a blend of electronic music, kind of easy listening and lo-fi with a blend of soul, do you agree with this?

RD: I would definitely call it “Electronic Soul”.

F: Two of your mixes are "Hand me Downs" and "Broken Stereo-type", tell me about these.

RD: "Hand Me Downs" is a mix, I did with Dj SystemAddict. We’re into the same sounds, so it made sense to put something together. It’s a blend; smooth, lo-fi, experimental, jazz, hip hop beats, something to chill out to. Planning on putting out Volume 2, so be on the lookout for that.

"Broken Stereo-type" is an experimental house mix I put together. I threw in some vocal bits from an old movie (guess which one) to add to the overall mood of the mix. It’s a progression of deep and moody house sounds.

F: can you tell us a little bit about the Tree House and Maintain?

RD: the Tree House is my homebass. It's where I live, record and put everything together (aka my apartment). Maintain is a creation between Miguel Ibarra and I. We were working together at a print shop a while back and we just started printing our own shirts and giving a few out to friends, so more people started asking about them and wanting one, it kind of just stemmed from there. Miguel handles the design concepts and I take care of print production. We also co-lab with forward minded artists, and designers. Tim Razo, Matt Poe, and Zeque Pena have all contributed to Maintain. I feel that with what we are doing with Maintain, we can get into anything really: art, design, clothing, print, music and shows.

F: where you do you regularly play?

RD: right now I don’t have a residency anywhere, but here and there you can find me spinning at the Black Market alongside dj SystemAddict on a random Thursday or Saturday. Art showings, house parties, local shows. Also spin frequently on the Outside the Box radio show in Las Cruces, NM with Ash and Los. Wax Wednesday at Soho once in a while.

F: what new projects are to ray dub in the future?, new mixes, tours?

RD: just keep doing what I keep doing. Put out quality mixes, keep digging for records, work with like-minded individuals, and put together gatherings of my own…Push Maintain as far as it can go.
